Elgar's Music for the Powick Asylum

Elgar's Music for the Powick Asylum
Friday 1st June 2012

3.00pm

Presented by ESO

A performance of Elgar's Music for Powick Asylum from the ESO Players, conducted by Barry Collett.

The Powick Lunatic Asylum, now demolished, was where Elgar obtained his first paid employment as a musician.

In 1877, joining the asylum band as a violinist from 1879 until 1884, he took on the role of bandmaster, a job which involved not only conducting the assembled forces but also composing pieces for the band to play at its Friday evening dances.

Barry Collett is the subject expert when it comes to this music - not only making the first recording of it, but also compiling the first publication of the scores.

This event is a Private Hire and is part of the Elgar Festival, 31 May - 2 June 2012. For more information visit http://www.eso.co.uk/.
