Wednesday 14th July to Tuesday 3rd August At the Boy Scouts’ first rally at the Crystal Palace in 1909, a small group of girls turned up uninvited and asked for something for the girls. In an age when skirts were ankle length and young ladies never ran or swam, the idea of girls camping in woods was unheard of. In 1910, Robert Baden Powell formed the Girlguides and later his wife Olave was appointed the Chief Guide. Today there are ten million girls and women in Guiding worldwide. Guiding has changed with the times, but the Promise remains the central pivot of Girlguiding UK. This exhibition commemorates the fact that in this Centenary Year Guiding is still thriving in our local area.
