Based on John Boyne's novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas focuses on the friendship that springs up between an eight year old German boy, Bruno, and a Jewish boy of the same age, Shmuel. Bruno is unaware that Shmuel is an inmate of a concentration camp, known only to him as a ‘farm'. He is also oblivious to the fact that his father, ‘a good soldier and decent man', is actually the man who runs the camp. Slowly the illusions that hold the family together crumble as the truth seeps into their home and lives. Despite the difficult setting of this film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is not bleak or sentimental, "it's an unusual and brave piece of family entertainment, and one worth seeing." - Cosmo Landesman, The Sunday Times
