Directed by Luchino Visconti, 1963This new digital restoration of Luchino Visconti's spectacular 1963 film is set in 1860s Sicily, a time of radical Italian Nationalism, and follows the Sicilian Prince of Salina (Burt Lancaster) and his family as they adjust to revolutionary times. Adapted from Tomasi di Lampedusas’ esteemed novel of the same name, this is a tragicomic depiction of a class eclipsed by history. Also starring Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon, this gorgeous evocation of an era - beautifully photographed, designed and costumed, with a rousing score by Nino Rota - glitters with superb set pieces, culminating in the the film's most famous sequence, a mesmerising ballroom scene employing hundreds of extras where we can see and feel a society in transition.
“A masterpiece - beautiful, intelligent, deeply moving.” Philip French, The ObserverItalian with English Subtitles
