Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday was the film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim. It also launched his on-screen alter ego, the courteous, well-meaning, eternally accident-prone Monsieur Hulot, with whom Tati would forever be inseparably associated. Chaos ensues when a sleepy French coastal resort is invaded by holidaymakers in energetic pursuit of fun. As the prologue to the film warns us, there is little plot, but instead a seamless succession of gently mocking studies in human absurdity. This newly restored version of Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and brings a classic of comedy and cinema back to audiences in beautiful vividness and clarity. A must see for all lovers of film and humour.
