Directed by Sylvain ChometThe Illusionist is wistful, melancholic and beautiful. Based on an unmade script by Jacques Tati and brought to life by beautiful hand-drawn animation from Sylvain Chomet (
Belle Ville Rendevous), it has gentle humour and a keen eye that make it a true cinematic treat. Tatischeff the illusionist and his rabbit perform for desultory onlookers whilst his audience is stolen by emerging rock stars. In search of work, he moves from Paris to London and then to the Western Isles where he meets Alice, a pretty young waitress who happily leaves her job to follow him. They find themselves at the Edinburgh Fringe trying to drum up audiences but, as Alice enjoys herself more and more, the magic begins to pall for the illusionist. A truly beautiful homage to Tati’s original script, this animated feature will delight lovers of magic, humour and classic cinema.
