This beautifully restored classic based on James Jones' best-seller focuses on the passions, aspirations and frustrations of a group of soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the run up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Private Robert E. Lee Prew Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), a loner who lives by his own code of ethics, becomes infatuated with nightclub hostess Lorene (Donna Reed). Prew's best friend, wisecracking Maggio (Frank Sinatra), is persecuted by sadistic stockade sergeant Fatso Judson (Ernest Borgnine) and Sergeant Milt Warden (Burt Lancaster) enters into an affair with Karen (Deborah Kerr), the wife of his commanding officer. Director Fred Zinnemann expertly juggles this large cast of characters and intertwines multiple romances and storylines underpinned by a sense of impending doom that foretells the grim destiny that will overtake them all. Winner of seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director).
