Romeo and Juliet is set in 1950s New York and explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs and the romance between Tony, an American, and Maria, the sister of the rival Puerto Rican gang’s leader. The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social issues marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein’s unforgettable score features classic songs:
