Pershore Jazz on a Summer’s Day

Eighteen of Britain’s top jazz musicians join us live on stage at Number 8 to present a kaleidoscope of classic jazz from the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Each session reveals a different scintillation from the dynamic music scene of the era. ‘Around Five Pennies’ recalls the Red Nichols bands, which sometimes featured swing legends Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Jimmy Dorsey, whilst ‘The Spanish Tinge’ will illustrate the influence of Latin rhythms. Next up, ‘Red Hot Pepper Stomp’ owes its content to Jelly Roll Morton, who claimed to have invented jazz (he didn’t!). ‘Music of the Jazz Age’ is high-octane Dixieland, all the rage in the 20s, and ‘Playing with Strings’ will give more exposure to the little-known Dallas String Band from Texas. The finale – ‘Rhythm is Our Business’ – highlights the best of the Swing era big bands from USA and Britain.

All six sessions will be compered by classic jazz devotee Jonathan Holmes from BBC Bristol.
