Deeply troubled by the suicide of one of her patients, renowned psychiatrist Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster) is drawn into a murder investigation. When she finds that files have been stolen, Lilian takes matters into her own hands and, with help from her ex-husband, turns amateur sleuth.
